The Australian has reported that the first edition of the new state-owned newspaper will be launched on Thursday, with the first stories and features appearing online.
The state-run paper is set to be run by Fairfax Media and will run at least three days a week.
According to the report, the newspaper will have no advertising but will be distributed on mobile devices.
In total, Fairfax Media will control 95 per cent of the newspaper, with News Corp controlling 5 per cent.
News Corp is also set to own the Herald Sun newspaper, which has been taken over by the Herald Media Group.
