Police Commissioner James O’Neill said Sunday that the NYPD would be doing “a lot worse” if it didn’t have helmets on its officers.
O’Neil told reporters that the department had already taken steps to ensure that officers donned helmets for the first time during a violent incident.
He said the department has also developed an emergency helmet that would be used in the event of a mass shooting.
Police wear helmets to protect their heads from head injuries.
The department also has a helmet-free zone, where officers can wear helmets while not in uniform.
O,Neill said, will continue to work with the NYPD to develop a system to make sure that officers have the proper gear.
